MY FIRST IMPRESSION
POSTED Feb 25, 2000

This is what I wrote back in Oct. 1988 about this question.

When we first drove up the driveway to Sunnyridge (I think Jimmy's van only made it part way up), we were greeted by a cloud of flies, a very snotty-nosed kid, and mothers with babies. When the dust cleared it was replaced by the lingering odor of the outhouse. I didn't see (but wish I had a picture of) all our faces, but my own face was straining to maintain the happy hippy smile but my mouth kept hanging open. I had somehow envisioned a tranquil and busy community in a gorgeous forest setting. Surprise!

I felt pretty intimidated at first. It seemed like everyone else knew each other well, and had been there a long time. Bob Hale, my partner at the time, was pretty gregarious, so I think he made a place for both of us pretty quickly.
