For those who were wondering about a good place to start a commune. I would have to suggest washington state, near yakima, or on its outskirts. There is excellent farmland, mild winters, and good people. It is neer seattle so that any craft or organic food can be sold there.(large market for that). People raise all sorts of animals here, and the area is full of orchards. land can be perchased cheap, there might not be indoor plumbing on the land that is farther out. it is just land, if your lucky there is probaly a stream on it that water can be purified from. You wanted AUTHENTIC. most have buildings that are old. I like to call it heaven!!!also the land around here isn't completely spoiled. feel free to e-mail me with questions or comments. and don't worry, im not a real estate agent.:)

I lived at 118 Hugenot St.in New Paltz. This was a communal scene in the summer of '68 that spawned the New Paltz side of the Sunnyridge family.I came to Sunnyridge about 1972 and lived there on & off for 2 years. I was around when Clem drownded, August was born and people started moving out of the lodge & into separate houses. I may have been the first Sunnyridger to leave for Yachats/ Newport and later Eugene. Greetings to all my old friends!

My name is Marc. I moved to Takilma in 1968 with many people from Costa Mesa, and Laguna Beach. We bought land along the Illinois River in April l968. We broke ground on Takilma Road. Bought our land from Gary and Diane. Let me know how to access any messages back. I don't know anything about computers. I'm at a public library. I've been an alcohol/drug/domestic violence counselor for 20 yrs. Wild interdimensions experiences in Takilma in 1968!

Just Curious: I was born in the wrong time period! I've wanted to be a
"hippie" for years and have enjoyed visiting your site and discovering
new information about your community. I was wondering, though, is
there a way to be considered a hippie now-a-days? Especially if you
don't smoke and are of the Christian faith?

Tried leaving a message at another sunnyridge message board, but it didn't go through. Last entry in it was several months ago. I came up to Takilma April 1968 from Costa Mesa with Ron and Nancy, Peter and Betty and their families. Robert N (Duke), Gary M, Bigtree and Gloria (Little Tree), David D (on violin), Jerry G were there also. I Bought land from Gary and Diane R. They lived in a barn. The email address from the library is not in use now. Learning to use a computer for the first time. Thought I'd get through this incarnation without having to deal with one. Guess I was wrong. Will communicate if I'm supposed to. Thank you!

Great site Ted!
I drifted to Takilma back in the spring of '70 on the run from the draft. A friend of mine named Kirk had met Paul McCoy in SF and become friends and Paul told him he was moving there where a lot people he knew from the city had moved. I had heard of it from people I knew in Portland. Rick Guyer, who used to work light shows at the Crystal Ballroom had moved there and he was always a good guy to me, so I thought it would be a good place to check out. I wasn't around long. I met Takilma Nick, Charlie two shoes and Joyce, Delbert, Dino and Dale Martinson, Spiderman, Leonard in Wilderville, Long Larry, Mumbles, and a bunch of other great people, and a few who frankly scared the shit out of me. lol.

A couple years later after getting out of the army I spent a summer around Selma and down the river near bridge creek. Wonderful memories. If anyone reads this who remebers me I'd love to hear from them.

Hey man, hippies smell. I oughta know, I was one. And the chicks smell too, like an old dog. Hey, they looked that way too. I don't know who my real mother or father are. I sucked on just about every nursing hippy chicks teat when I was growing up. When I was too old to suck all we ate were mushrooms and maci-cheese. The adults all seemed happy and content as an ostrich with its head in the sand. Us kids were miserable, hungry and cold. Damn you commie ass kissers. I now work for a defense contractor and live in a big glass and metal house all by myself. Thanks for fucking my life up you stupid counter culture losers. I will vote for W every election until I die. NUKE THE WHALES FOR WHIRLED PEAS!

I visited Sunnyridge for a few months in the winter/spring of 1972. My memories are a bit vague because I was a runaway. I was also very nearsighted and didn't have glasses! I wanted to say hello and maybe on the offchance someone might have remembered the 13 year old who wandered in on her own. Generally, my memories of Sunnyridge are pretty benign, not true of all memories from that time. Cheers - Shannon
