The Buddha was a statue on a shelf outside the most communal building at Sunnyridge, the "old kitchen". It was also part of the "couryard", and became what it was "organically". Although there was an unwritten rule at Sunnyridge that there be no posters, signs, and such (we didn't even have clocks or calendars)...the Buddha proved to be an artistic representation of our spiritual ambiguity.

About 10:30 one evening, '68 or '69, my mother calls - She was at a friend's apartment in midtown Manhattan. "You got ta come down here and get this thing - it's a statue. I said "What kinda statue? What's this about?
She replies, "I don't know, it's a statue, you'll like it".
So began the story of the buddha - though of course he probably had an illustrious and/or intriguing and/or exciting existence before our paths ever crossed. At one point his head was covered with candle wax. For years he sat on top of my wood stove in Portland storing and radiating heat. Most surprizing, one of my housemates decided to see what was under the white paint and he not only turned out to be brass, not cast iron as I'd assumed, but there were intricate details in several places.
He was out of my possession occasionally in times past - I hated to uproot him from a comfortable perch. But he was always there and ready to travel when I went to retrieve him.
He's got a life of his own, but if he belonged anywhere it was at Sunnyridge.

Possibly because he has found inner bliss...or maybe he smells the coffee brewing.

Were there basic beliefs other than a common disdain for conventional society? How did you screen out potential assholism?

Well, this is a long time in responding but I believe there is a misconception here. This Buddha was decorated in love and our sense of beauty. We did not really have distain for society or paths to higher spirituality but rather were separating ourselves from the shackles of concretized thought.
