For the most part, we were vegetarians. At least we regarded it as an ideal. However, some of us had to sneak to town for an occasional hamberger. Consequently, we progressed from the procurement of fresh milk from Mr.Ed, to eggs from the Chicken Lady, Chickens of our own, goats (for milk), and finally a couple of pigs for pork. Since I tended to jump into the jobs that no one else wanted, I wound up butchering one of the pigs along with Don, pictured. I forget who actually shot the creature. I do remember how good the pork was however. My great revelation? "Unclean flesh" is simply meat from an animal that can tolerate a lot of impurities in it's diet, but if you feed it good stuff, it is just as "clean" as any other meat. And tasty.

Some of us were vegetarians the whole time and still are. Vegeterians, but not Vegans. There were chickens at SR from the beggining. In fact, at the very beggining some got away, or nver made it to the coop and roosted in the trees for a few days. We had to find them at night and bring them in. It was a gas. The whole meat thing came in, what for me were the last stages.

MEAT IS MURDER!!!!!! SO MUCH FOR PEACE AND LOVE. YOU SICK FUCKS.

FROM:       SIG, on Apr 13, 2000
Why would someone who thinks meat is murder pick a name like "Rat"? How about "Lettuce"?...

FROM:       Peter, on Apr 19, 2000
This Rat person would not have made it at SR. A couple of discussions in the out house would have sealed his/her fate.

How easily we forget.... Peter, remember the first Thanksgiving at Sunnyridge?? After much debate, we had a delicious turkey!!

FROM:       Nina, on Nov 6, 2000
I remember when they killed the pig and also when someone brought a dead deer. It was gross and scary to hear that pig squeeling and yelling as it died. This is not a commentary on to meat or not to meat, just a memory...

I have no memory of any turkey that first Thanksgiving and the reason is that I was in Alifornia in the Trinity mountains at the old "Christian commune where we got the kitchen stove. They served Turkey there and I actually had a little piece of it as I did not want to "offend" my hosts- It is the last thing that walks that I ate knowingly.

I remember visiting the Christian commune that the elderly religious people ran in the Trinities..Was amazed that Jesse (2 yrs old) became a perfect little gentleman in their presence! I was very impressed by their orderliness and serenity-and of course, their generosity. They were very kind to us.

Thankyou for sharing your wonderful experience with me. I am old enough to remember the times, but being an aussie alas missed out on the US hippy movement. I did however cultivate the hair and adopt most of the practices, but I was coming into the culture young. Now I am older and my husband and I are considering the permaculture way of life in an eco village. It sounds just like what we all need. You guys look like you enjoyed every moment, its a pity you all moved on. Love and luck to you all.

That is one ugly piece of meat. We weren't exactly
vegetarians at the Eatons, but we had one cheese night and
one meat night a week. The rest was rice and veggies and??
But we had our mishaps with killing chickens(never again)
and Mike(17 at the time) killing a deer down at Sucker creek
and having to carry it home, with that poor creature still
half alive. That was one horrible night and it helped to
make most of us vegetarians. And now, daughter Sue is the
only vegetarian, and granddaughter Kelsey is a true Vegan.
The rest us would gladly partake of your pork, Teddy.

Where did everybody go? And yeah, about having to kill animals, well, it's a gross thing, regardless of your beliefs... I have been a vegetarian for 28 of my 43 years, but now that everyone is going "vegan", can understand how intolerance can really offend... to each his own, if he/she has the stomach for it...

Meat wastes all of our resources on earth!!!! It is slowly using up all of our water!!! We need to destroy this process!!!!

i think that being a vegeterian is a smart thing, plus it makes exactly NO since for a animal to die just so some people can satisfy there appetite, and then let the meat be (rot)in his/her body for 2-3 days. It's not right! But if you are a meat-eater, all i would do is just comment on how it's not healthy, though it may taste really good, and then let them make a choice and i'll move on with my life living as a healthy vegeterian, bye and eat right! :D e-mail me pleez
