Ruth, Serene, Bo, and I lived at Doo Dah Farm Takilma for 15 years and visited Sunnyridge mostly to party. Wondering if anyone out there recognizes our names. Most people called me Duff or Duffy.. I was a teacher at Ill Val high school.
Hoping to hear from someone... Jeff and Ruth Campbell

School Days                         by Cathy Zook

The Dome School children are living a great life. Fresh air, friendship, and nurturing adults surround the children. Many changes have occurred at the school this year. I am writing as the school’s new co-administrator, joining Susan G. and the rest of the crew that works together to keep the school humming. The fall has passed quickly, but we kept extremely busy and packed in the fun.
The year started, as usual, with the Bike-a-Thon and camp-out at Grayback Campground. The children love the fun of taking over the campground and of raising more than $1,000 for their school through pledges for the laps they ride. First graders often learn to ride just in time for the event and the stories of who rode into the bushes are retold for days. The Hope Mountain Barter Faire quickly followed (two weeks later), this time camping with a greater community while the music, crafts and fun of such a festival enchanted the children. Halloween brought another round of festivities with the annual potluck and carnival. The robot pinata engineered by the elementary students valiantly survived a barrage of gleeful destruction before it fell and let go its treasures.
The children daily bring the community building to life. Katherine Roncalio, Heather Jantz, and Marisa Dwyer are teaching a full class of twenty-two first through fifth graders. Heather and Marisa both have children in the school. Rachel Goodman and Audrey _______ volunteer their Spanish expertise every Thursday with this class. Ross Welcome has joined the school this year as the elementary music teacher. He is currently pursuing a music teaching degree at SOU. Every Friday he brings his enthusiasm to the school, engaging the minds and senses of the children. Sparrow, a school parent and local jewelry artisan, has taken on art and computer classes with the children. They are currently making masks and developing characters and costumes that they will present in a play. Willow Swenson, a school parent, is creating and teaching the science lessons this year. Hands-on experimentation is a regular activity for all of the students and local hikes with Ron Pio excite the children‘s spirit of adventure and observation. Many other parents also participate in their children’s cooperative education by teaching language arts and math. As well, the children are blessed with endless community input and generosity. From doing tile work to visiting the mask studio to doing the ropes course, the Dome School teachers are experts at integrating these many enriching experiences.
Helen Kauffman is teaching a multi-age preschool and kindergarten class this year with the assistance of Rochelle Gale and Ron Pio. The class of seventeen three to six year olds is really almost too cute to bear. Helen weaves the children’s interactions with mastery still. They regularly venture on field trips, as well, visiting this year the pumpkin patch, friends with Native American artifacts, and the pottery studio in town.
The Building Committee has been very active this year. Nearing the building’s 20th birthday, many parts of the building are showing their wear. Fundraising efforts gave the building a newly refinished floor last June ( a $3400 project). The fuels reduction grant was received after the woods around the school were cleared. A workday this October gave a lot of attention to the kitchen and saw the construction of concrete steps to the loading dock aided by a donation from the buying club. The two bathrooms in the main building are excitedly anticipating new floors this coming June and maybe even a couple of new sinks!
The Greenhouse Committee made progress in its plans this fall. A former Dome School family donated a hoop frame to the school last year. The frame was erected with community help and was finally covered with greenhouse plastic and planted with salad greens by the children. As well, river rock flowerbeds that were constructed last spring were filled with soil and planted with bulbs. It is very gratifying to see projects completed and to see the beautification of the school.
A new Board of Directors was elected in October. They bring with them a mixture of experience and enthusiasm. It is with this combination of gifts that the Dome School flourishes and so we look forward to an exciting rest of the year.

I guess I've moved rather far into the electronic age from the age of
outhouses, a pump at the sink and bathing in the river.  I found this site
while talking to another former Takilma resident on the phone and both of us
were on high speed access browsing the site.

I came to Takilma in 1970 ... A classic college dropout, tired of the Bay
Area.  I lived in a handmade house in a creek bed behind 10,000 ... Big
Tree's infamous house with the roll down volkswagon window.  I later lived
in that house, then up the road and then moved to Ashland and on.

Takilma was a special place .. My daughter was born there in 1971.  It was a
magical time.

When people ask me now about camping, I refuse.  Hey, I say, I camped for
years in Talkima.  No room service?  Now that's my idea of camping.

I hear Alan King is a ski maniac somewhere in Oregon; I'm still in touch
with Linda ... Aries Linda .. And am glad to read that Jim stayed and kept
healthcare going.  I was a volunteer at the clinic for a long time.

Thanks for the site.

Mark all calendars for the Hope Mountain Barter Faire October 6, 7, and 8, in the time of the harvest moon. This is our fourth year of gathering the family together for a weekend live-in/camp-out. It's a beautiful time, and a fundraiser for The Dome School. Get the scoop at 541-592-4458. See you there!
