This is a recipe for a beverage called "Switzle". It is a medicinal concoction actually, for the relief of just about any stomach problem. I recall the name as coming from Yiddish, but I may be wrong. This drink got rid of my own indigestion and stomach ache on a few occasions.
Fill a glass with few tablespoons of apple-cider vinegar, add water and enough honey to make it almost taste like apple cider. It should taste yummy and noticeably quell the fires in the navel chakra.

As an alternative to tobacco (I guess this is a recipe), collect some bark from the older section of the madrone tree (a semi-hardwood with pale flesh colored bark that looks like someone is peeling after a bad sunburn)...stick this in a pipe, and smoke it. I think this is from the native americans in this area of the country.

There were many opinions as to how to brew the coffee at Sunnyridge. We were pretty much confined to one method with varying finishing touches. Hobo coffee or Turkish, if you like, was the method.
Boil Water
let it cool a bit.
Add coffee.
Now, the techniques:
*lightly touch the grounds and they fall to the bottom.
*tap the pot to make them fall.
*add some egg shells to the brew to settle the grinds.
Very good stuff!

The pickle barrel: This was kept in the larder and before that, the root cellar. It was a large wooden barrel filled with brine water...I think that's it. Next we threw in cucumbers (of course) but also green tomatoes, onions, garlic, and perhaps a few late season vegies that didn't make it. It was so nice in the middle of winter when rice seemed to be the staple to fish some cool sour pickles from the barrel. The vegetables would ferment in the brine (salt water) and create this foam on top. Mmmm I don't know if we added vinegar or not.

I remember taking almost all day to make pizza for the 20 of us that lived at the claim at the time. By the time I made the dough, let it rise, punched it down, formed the crusts and so on, about an extra 30-35 people showed up! So after we ate the 14 pizzas, Peter says, "that was a great snack, now where's the dinner?" I think we made fried potatoes that night!

We used to get a bunch of us and truck out to a local orchard to pick Peaches. Our wages were a portion of the pick'ns. After eating our fill, we would spend hours peeling and cutting and stuffing canning jars we had boiled in a big kettle and storing them in the root cellar for winter. Sometimes "Mr. Ed" would give us a huge garbage can filled with his cow's milk which we would keep cool in the stream. What a treat to break out some canned peaches and add the cream that had risen to the top of the milk.

want to know how to make your own whisky just boil up 2 to 3 gallons of wheat or barley till soft then throw this in a 45 gallon barrel (plastic apple cider barrels work best) fill with hot water half full and add 5 bags of20 kg bags of sugar then fill the rest of the barrel with cold water and stir till sugar is disolved let sit till next day then add 6 table spoons of traditional bakers yeast;optional-(you can also add old fruit preserves on top about 3 gallons worth which gives it a very smooth smell and drink)let sit for aprox 27 to 30 days or untill it quits bubbling i also set the batch by the full moon right on the full moon which seems to work for me to make corn whisky add 2- 5 gallon pale of cooker corn with the wheat or barley have fun

Sunnyridger?Guest?Recipe: I always knew hippy food was bad but after reading your remeniscences I'm totally disgusted! I guess its good it's one of the things that passed with the end of that era. I'm so thankful that the earthy among us have learned to cook! The Sunnyridge food/starvation regime sounds like it would have driven the most staunch among you to the dark side pretty quick. Hey, why is it that almost all of you (except those few still in OR) live in Cali now? And who is this person who keeps badgering everyone for 'wisky' recipes? someone should tell him to get ahold of the Alaska Bootleggers Bible (if he can read) and give this page a rest.
